SSP Scholars scoop 14 distinctions for Kingsmead College

PARKTOWN – With lives based on some of the world's greatest icons' quotes; four learners who are part of a youth development programme achieved excellent matric results.

Four learners who are student sponsorship programme (SSP) scholars collectively reaped 14 distinctions for Kingsmead College in Rosebank in the recent 2019 IEB matric examinations.

The learners are Jenifer Iwuanyanwu (five distinctions), Katlego Kgomari (four distinctions), Tanya Swartz (three distinctions), and Tinyiko Chauke (two distinctions).

The quartet is recipients of one of the Parktown-based youth development programme, SSP’s five-year high school sponsorships. These are for gifted children from under-resourced homes to attend one of the top 25 independent and public high schools nationwide.

The scholarship application was an in-depth 10-month process, which included an entrance exam, interviews with parents, and tests to assess their intelligence quotient (IQ) and emotional quotients (EQ). It concluded with a finalist camp to assess peer interaction and the four girls were chosen to attend the school in Rosebank and soon excelled academically and culturally.

Iwuanyanwu, who attended Saxonwold Primary School before schooling at Kingsmead College, earned five distinctions, including for maths, accounting and life sciences. She would like to study medicine and lives her life according to the TD Jakes quote, “If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose.”

Kgomari, who lives in Meadowlands, lives her life according to the quote by Albert Einstein, “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.” She achieved distinctions in maths, French and Afrikaans. Sport and the arts are important to her and she played tennis, hockey, the clarinet and sang in the choir. Kgomari hopes to become an actuary, saying she sees it as, “A superpower! One uses statistics and calculus to assess risk and look at the feasibility of investments.”

Swartz, who took home distinctions in history, Afrikaans and life orientation for her single mom in Bosmont, recently received the Community Spirit Award for giving off her time to others without expecting anything in return. She is keen to study medicine and says the best advice she has been given is to eat almonds or cashews during exams. “They provide energy to help keep you going. I always found myself struggling to concentrate and this was great advice for me.”

Chauke lives in Tembisa with her nurse mother and earned 92 per cent for isiZulu and 87 per cent for maths literacy, a subject she took extra lessons for. While at school, she also gave extra isiZulu lessons to her fellow classmates, sang in the choir and took part in Glee Club.

SSP’s primary goal is to nurture future leaders for South Africa. The scholarship programme includes tuition, personal mastery and mentorship. The support given is not only academic; it also includes parental support. Orphans and vulnerable children are offered additional assistance.
