Reward offered for any information on New Year’s shooting incidents in Melville and Mary Fitzgerald Square

JOBURG – The Melville shooting left two people dead and in Mary Fitzgerald Square 11 people were injured.


The Gauteng police have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the perpetrator(s) responsible for two separate incidents in the early hours of New Year’s Day (1 January) at a restaurant in Melville and at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg. 

The police have offered a cash reward, Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said, “The search for unknown suspects is still under way after shots were fired indiscriminately at patrons just after 1am on New Year’s Day at Poppy’s Restaurant in Melville.”

The incident in Melville claimed the lives of two women, six other patrons were wounded and hospitalised.

The Mary Fitzgerald Square shooting incident occurred after 2.30am, eleven victims sustained gunshot wounds after shots were fired at the party-goers from an elevated platform suspected at this stage to be the M2 double-decker bridge, Peters explained.

On the cash reward, “On offer to any individual who can give information on either one of the shooting incidents, on condition such information leads to the arrest and successful prosecution of the suspects.”
