Man shot dead for allegedly stealing a cell phone

NEWTOWN – The man had multiple gun wounds on the upper body.

Police arrested a 32-year-old man after he allegedly shot an alleged thief multiple times on 5 January on the corner of Barney Simon and Mint roads in Newtown.

Johannesburg Central Police Station’s acting spokesperson Constable Constance Lelimo said police received a complaint about the incident and followed it up. When police arrived at the scene, they found the deceased lying on the ground and the paramedics were already on the scene.

According to Lelimo, the man had multiple gunshot wounds on the upper body and was certified dead by the paramedics. “It is alleged that the deceased was trying to rob the suspect off his cell phone but he shot him several times when he was trying to flee.”

She added that cell phone, as well as car keys apparently belonging to the suspect, were also found next to the deceased.

The suspect’s gun was confiscated and he has been charged with murder by the police. An investigation continues.
