A move towards keeping the City clean

JOBURG – Executive mayor of the City of Joburg, Geoffrey Makhubo kicks off the year on a clean slate following a clean-up campaign around Noord and Wanderers taxi ranks on 4 January.

Executive mayor of the City of Joburg, Geoffrey Makhubo kicked off the year on a clean slate following a clean-up campaign on 4 January. The mayor took on the task of helping keep the inner city clean as operation a ‘KleenaJoburg’ sets its sights on transforming the inner city into a clean and safe environment for residents to enjoy.

The operation also aims ensure by-law enforcement while the second clean-up campaign follows a successful clean-up operation that took place on 28 December 2019. During the clean-up operation huge amounts of illegally dumped waste were collected.

Armed with a broom, gloves and bin bags the mayor joined by Mpho Moerana, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, and over a hundred community members gathered together at Joubert Park to tackle the City’s litter problem.

The clean-up campaign took place around Noord and Wanderers taxi ranks and sees residents take a stand against a dirty environment and work with city departments to keep Joburg clean.

“I am tired of seeing dirt all over town. It’s not just the City’s problem, we must all help,” said Nonhlanhla Sibanda a Hilbrow resident.

The mayor highlighted that keeping Joburg clean was a collective responsibility that all of the City’s stakeholders must take responsibility for. Although Pikitup has three shifts that cater to the inner city, it is a challenge to keep Joburg clean without the help of the community.

“We are trying to change people’s attitude towards waste and littering because a dirty environment creates health problems,” said Makhubo.
