St John’s College #ClassOf2019 achieves outstanding results

HOUGHTON – The 137 learners achieved a 100 per cent pass rate with more than 99 per cent of learners achieving bachelor degree passes.


The 137 learners of the St John’s College #ClassOf2019 returned an exceptional set of matric results on 7 January.

The class achieved a 100 per cent pass rate with more than 99 per cent of learners having achieved bachelor passes.

The class returned a total of 483 distinctions of which 142 were 90 per cent or more in a subject.

A third of the class achieved six distinctions each with 13 learners achieving at least eight distinctions each.

Nine St John’s College learners achieved an average of 90 per cent or higher while 43.1 per cent of learners achieved an average of 80 per cent or more.

Sixty-five learners achieved distinctions in maths, 43 learners achieved distinctions in physical science and 56 learners achieved distinctions in English.

St John’s highlighted the achievements of their top academic achievers as follows:

  •  Gregory Basslian and Andrew Raney achieved eight distinctions each and an average of 93.6 per cent
  •  Benjamin Kahanovitz achieved nine distinctions and an average of 91.9 per cent
  •  Tariq Seedat achieved nine distinctions and an average of 90.6 per cent
  •  Matthew de la Rey achieved seven distinctions and an average of 90.6 per cent
  •  Michael Hoffman and Muhammad Moosajee achieved eight distinctions and an average of 90.4 per cent each
  •  James Geldenhuys achieved 10 distinctions and an average of 90 per cent.

Raney was named on the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) outstanding achievement list by being placed in the top 5 per cent of learners nationally in six subjects in addition to achieving a distinction in life orientation. Barend Badenhorst, Basslian, Sean Millar and Moosajee were included in the IEB commendable list by being placed in the top 5 per cent nationally in five subjects in addition to achieving a distinction in life orientation.
