Police hunt New Year’s day gunmen

NEWTOWN – Police are yet to confirm details of the six other people allegedly wounded in Johannesburg.

Johannesburg police are yet to confirm the exact number of people wounded in an alleged random shooting at the New Year’s Day celebration concert held at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown on 1 January.

The incident, which has been widely condemned, has sparked fears to many after a similar incident happened a few hours apart in Melville, in the north-west of Johannesburg where about eight people, including two women who were killed, were wounded in an alleged drive-by shooting.

At the Newtown’s celebration concert, Johannesburg Central Police Station’s acting communications officer, Constable Constance Lelimo, said only five people have been confirmed to have been wounded and hospitalised.

Initially, according to other media outlets, it was reported that 11 people were wounded in an apparent drive-by shooting from atop on the nearby M1 Highway, known as ‘Double Deck’.

“We have no records of the other six people as per the media reports because our officers only visited one hospital and recovered five people who were allegedly shot and wounded in the Newtown New Year’s Day celebration concert.

“No person has been arrested yet and we have also not yet confirmed that the shooting was directly from the highway as it has been highly reported as well.”

Meanwhile, Lelimo said two males were shot and killed in a separate incident on the corner of Nugget and Anderson streets in the inner city in the same early hours of that morning on New Year’s Day.

“The two were travelling in a bakkie when they were shot and killed. The motive for the shooting is unknown but police are investigating the matter.”

Police request anyone who might have witnessed any of the incidents or have information that can assist with the arrest of the perpetrators, to report to any of the nearby police stations.

Details: Johannesburg Central Police Station 011 497 7000.
