On behalf of the Parkview Residents Association (PRA), acting chairman Theresa Gibbon would like to wish their members, residents, friends, employees and their families an enjoyable and safe holiday season.
“We are sincerely grateful for the help and support of our ward councillor, Bridget Steer, the various PRA Exco and sub-committee members, all the Parkview businesses and volunteers and all the residents for the healthy debate, discussion, sharing of helpful information and for the financial donations and donations in kind – it all makes for a functional suburb that is a good place in which to live and work,” Gibbon said.
Some of the 2019 successes and achievements of the PRA include:
- The ongoing street cleaning and stormwater drain project (with Pikitup) in which streets in Parkview and Greenside East streets are cleared regularly of accumulated rubbish and debris.
- The ongoing maintenance of George Hay Park (in cooperation with Johannesburg City Parks) to keep the park clean, safe and accessible for all – indigenous flower beds and a vegetable garden have been planted. The PRA also pays a park keeper for their services three days a week.
- Our Street Trees subcommittee will have audited all Parkview street trees by the end of the year #SaveTheForestNotTheTree. Replanting recommendations will be made next year.
- By the end of the year, most of our kerb street names will have been re-painted (about 580 of them).
- Parkview has signed up with Vumacam for the installation of cameras in strategic locations around the suburb. These will be functional by the end of December this year.
- At least 10 per cent of our suburb has complained of a poor or non-existent Vodacom signal, and the PRA are working with Vodacom to erect a few more micro masts around the suburb in the next few months.
Gibbon added that the PRA also considered town planning applications to ensure sustainable development in Parkview in compliance with heritage legislation. She said, “It ensures ongoing communication with residents through the Parkview Council and Parkview Network WhatsApp groups, and acts as a liaison between residents, councillors, municipal departments, business owners, schools, the golf course, estate agents, various community organisations and SafeParkview.”
Plans for 2020 include:
- The upgrading of Tyrone Avenue which aims to re-tar the road surface, repair damaged pavements and develop an open ‘village square’ in the library parking area. Quotes will be presented and public participation meetings organised towards the middle of next year.
- Investigating whether the PRA could consider applying for the Tyrone business node or a larger section of Parkview, or all of Parkview suburb to be declared a COJ Special Ratings Area (the new version of the previous CID or City Improvement District).
- Multi-event passes for 2020/1 will be distributed early next year to allow residents easy access into the suburb when large scale events close the suburb.
- A new multi-function website.
