Tshego keeps his pulse on the game

JOBURG – We caught up with Tshego for a behind the scene look at his album, career and newfound fatherhood role.

Following a short musical hiatus, singer/rapper and producer, Tshego shook up the streets with his album, Pink Panther. The long-awaited album has been three years in the making and features an elite roaster of artists. We caught up with the No Ties hit maker for a behind the scene look at his album, career and newfound fatherhood role.

Q How is fatherhood treating you so far?

A Man, I’d like to think that it’s treating me amazing. It’s my first time, so, I don’t know how fatherhood is supposed to treat you.

Q Even though your fatherhood role is relatively new, in some way it does affect your career, how do you think you’ll find a balance between the two?

A I’ll have to see, it’s too early to tell, but from what I can tell right now, the club is not as interesting to me anymore and going places for no reason is not as interesting to me as it was before. I’d rather spend time with my daughter right now – especially right now.

Q Now that we’ve kicked if off with the family relations and your fatherhood role, let’s delve deeper into the music. Your move from Family Tree to Universal Music, how has it been?

A It’s been dope, it’s been exactly what I wanted because between Family Tree and Universal there’s been a gap. I’ve been talking to Universal for the past three years while I was at Family Tree. Without that Family Tree experience I wouldn’t be as good of a performer that I am now because I had to stand next to Cass’ and keep up with his energy and his crowd control – I had no choice but to get better. When it came time to leaving it was also dope because there were no strings attached. So far it’s been great.

Q  You’ve mentioned before that the music about the fans – your supporters –  and they’ve been grilling for a body of work for the longest time. Do you feel that Pink Panther satisfied their cries for an album?

A I know that I did my best. I like it and I think it’s bumping. Everyone has trusted me up until this point, they’ve heard my work and I think they’ll be satisfied if they’re not too critical about it and just listen to it.

Q If there’s a single that has created a lot of hype around the album it’s No Ties with King Monada. How did that collaboration come about?

A Instagram, man. I was listening to his stuff for a while and when I made that beat it was around the time I was heavily into his sound. It was a no brainer because this is his vibe and his tempo at least – he proved me right and did the right thing.

Q Being the main producer of the whole project, what sound and feel were you trying to weave out throughout the project?

A The musicality is a thread in my work  whether there’s an 808 involved or not, whether it’s trap or not, there’s always a very musical and melodic element involved in all song and that’s just how my ears work – I lean towards that naturally.
