Outgoing executive headmaster reflects on his last year at St John’s College

HOUGHTON – Executive headmaster Paul Edey encourages the school community to be generous to people in need this festive season.

St John’s College outgoing executive headmaster Paul Edey reflected on the past year at the Houghton-based school.

“We have had a particularly strong group of matrics who are spirited, have led by example, and who have contributed to every facet of life at the school. We have excelled academically with boys placed in the top 10 in national and international Olympiads. Our sports teams, particularly the open teams, have had excellent seasons with boys selected for Gauteng and national representation,” said Edey.

He added that the school has hosted glorious music concerts, drama productions, art exhibitions, public speaking and debating events as well as going on local and international tours.

“My highlight is to be retiring with the group of boys that I started with, a group that I have got on with so well. This group of matric boys has been so committed to their school, and to have walked with them every step of their college careers has been a privilege. The First XV Derbys against King Edward VII and St Stithians this year will always stand out.”

Edey reflected on the challenges facing many schools in the country including a poor economy and high immigration across all sectors of the population.

“A school like St John’s need to strive to remain relevant and accessible and enable a greater cross-section of our community to attend.”

Edey concluded, “The Springbok rugby team has shown us that if we focus and put our minds to something, we can do it. My message to our community for the holiday season is to give generously to those who have nothing, spend real time with your families and remember what a season of goodwill is all about.”

Stuart West from Herschel Girls’ in Cape Town will be replacing Edey from next year.
