Support Princess Alice Adoption home during the season for giving

WESTCLIFF – Community members are encouraged to give donations to support the toddlers and babies at the home in Westcliff.

Support the Princess Alice Adoption Home in Westcliff this festive season and show love to the 30 babies and toddlers in their care.

The place of safety for young babies and toddlers was founded in 1930 by Queen Victoria’s great granddaughter Princess Alice.

Manager of the home Jo-Anne Schermeier said she is grateful for the support from individuals, corporates and trusts that have enabled them to keep their doors open.

“Our highlight is always the children who thrive in our care and are able to leave with their forever families… We are exceptionally pleased with our Granny Programme (an early childhood stimulation programme), despite not having a committed funder. A new sponsor (Spence Chapin from the USA) has now come on board to ensure the programme can be sustained and expanded,” said Schermeier.

She said that caregivers have received further training in child and youth care work this year, which in turn benefits the children.

“One of our challenges that we have faced in the past couple of years has been that more young children have stayed longer in our residential care. While this has placed further strain on our limited resources, during 2019, we have been able to implement a more structured ECD programme for the children who are more than two and a half year’s old. This is helping their development as they progress towards school-readiness.”

The home has seen 10 adoptions, two children reunited with their biological families and one child being placed in a foster family. There are also three more adoptions pending, which should be finalised by the end of the year.

Community members are encouraged to give donations of nappies (sizes 2,3 and 4), Dis-Chem gift vouchers, milk formula (Nan 1, Nan 2 and Nan 3), household cleaning products, medium and large cooking pots with lids, baby soap and shampoo, clothes and shoes for boys and girls and toys.

Locals are also urged to donate financially or volunteer at the home.
