New vehicle to help HospiceWits homecare services

HOUGHTON – The new vehicle was donated by the National Lotteries Commission.

HospiceWits is thankful for the donation of a new vehicle to assist its ageing home-care fleet made possible by a R656 904 grant from the National Lotteries Commission.

The new mobile unit will be used to serve the growing number of previously disadvantaged and indigent patients in Johannesburg and Soweto with chronic and life-threatening conditions.

Chief executive officer at HospiceWits Jacqui Kaye said, “We are immensely grateful to the NLC for their support that includes a new vehicle to replace one of our older, less reliable vehicles. Our patients and their families rely heavily on regular visits from our palliative-trained nurses, counsellors and other members of our inter-disciplinary team.”

Kaye explained that palliative care focuses on meeting the needs of the whole person, addressing the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of each family.

Although home-based care is the preferred option for most patients as they can remain in their own familiar surroundings with their families, HospiceWits also has in-patient units in Houghton and Soweto for individuals requiring admittance for pain and symptom management as well as respite care.
