Nothing beats a good road trip, especially in a country as beautiful as South Africa. From dusty and welcoming small towns to amazing oceanic views of the coast, the beauty of SA is unmatched when seen through the windows of a nice and comfy vehicle.

The festive season signals a busy time on South African roads as people gear up to get to their holiday destination, however, a time that would otherwise be chaotic can prove to be seamless when we plan ahead and keep our road trip itinerary in check.

We’ve cooked up five tips to consider when embarking on your road trip during the festive season, and we’re pleased to say this will be a pleasurable experience for you and your road trip squad!

  1. Choose the perfect destination

First and foremost, it’s important to know exactly where you’re going. So make sure it’s a worthwhile destination. With so many beautiful places to see in South Africa it may seem like a daunting task. Think about ideas for travel destinations and what to do during your free time; Make sure each person involved has something to look forward to on the trip.

  1. Stick to your budget

This one is a no-brainier, there’s no way you can go on a trip without any money. It’s wise to always start out the year with vacation budget where you throw in a couple of rands and then letting it accumulate up until the time of your trip. Make sure to look out for budget-friendly places and keep some extra cash on-deck just in case you might need an extra pair of socks.

  1. Pack light and tight

Packing for a trip is another daunting task because you are not really sure about what you might need on the trip. It is made easier when you actually know the kind of place you’re going to, for instance, if you’re going to Durban you obviously have to pack summer clothes, sandals, a towel and sunblock to name a few, so always pack what you’ll really need and take extra cash just in case you might need to buy something.

  1. Keep your safety in check

You need to be mentally alert and in good physical condition when embarking on a road trip, and stop at least every two hours for a break to refresh yourself and do not become fatigued and impair your driving ability.

  1. Get a banging playlist going

The road travelled is definitely boring with no music, you need some music to compliment the beautiful scenery you’ll witness. Although we can’t tell you what to listen to exactly, make sure your playlist is banging. We know it’s tempting, however, avoid drinking alcohol before and during the journey, just keep the snacks and some bush tea going throughout the trip – the music is enough to keep you buzzing.
