Locals are encouraged to support the work of HospiceWits by donating good quality resalable items to one of their seven shops across the city.
The Gazette visited HospiceWits Parkhurst Legacy Shop where vintage items including ornaments, clothing, jewellery, books and furniture are sold.
Marketing and business development manager at HospiceWits Leandi Streeter said, “These stores provide sustainable income streams to enable HospiceWits to provide quality palliative care to 5 600 patients and their families through our home-care programme and in-patient unit. We also provide support and counselling to families, helping them cope through difficult times.”
Streeter explained that it costs R35 million to conduct the work of caring for 5 600 patients and their families each year.
“With the tough economy at the moment, it’s difficult to make ends meet.”
HospiceWits retail manager Jerry Tshabalala said the Parkhurst Legacy Shop generates R1.3 million in income each year. With other stores in Soweto, Parkmore, Houghton, Cresta, Orange Grove and Kensington, they generate 33 per cent of the running costs of HospiceWits.
Streeter also encouraged community members looking for vintage gifts, items for their home or clothing items to support their stores.
Tshabalala said, “People have found beautiful wedding dresses here and have sent us photos thanking the donors for dresses that they would otherwise not have been able to afford.”
Residents who are down-scaling or want to donate items can call the various stores who will collect items from households.
