It’s a poetry picnic in World of Words

JOBURG – Hosted at the lush Victoria Yards, the World of Words Poetry Picnic defied the persistent rainy weather and gave poetry enthusiasts a beautiful day out immersed in a whirlwind of poetry, live music and all sorts of treats.

World of Words, the home of poets and one of Joburg’s outstanding poetry movements hosted a jam-packed poetry picnic on 8 December. Hosted at the lush Victoria Yards, the World of Words Poetry Picnic defied the persistent rainy weather and gave poetry enthusiasts a beautiful day out immersed in a whirlwind of poetry, live music and all sorts of treats.

Since its inception in 2017, World of Words has positioned itself as a fresh voice in poetry, owning the space as one of Jozi’s freshest poetry sessions. The brand of poetry is innovative, daring and constantly evolving.

“The poetry sessions came about due to the whole vision of community. We saw that there were limited platforms for poets, from there on we started hosting poetry sessions,” said Hector Mgiba, co-founder of World of Words.

Throughout its existence, World of Word’s growth and messaging have gained large popularity among various audiences for its new and refreshing approach to poetry. Earlier this year, World of Words called on 15 budding poets to take part in their first-ever slam poetry competition giving away R5 000 to the winner.

“We have been featured on festival stages such as the Human Rights Festival on the poetry stage where we gave young poets the opportunity to perform alongside poetry legends such as Lebohang Mashile. Through the world’s very diverse and unique vibe it has developed a loyal and consistent following because like-minded individuals feel at home in the space,” said Mgiba.

The poetry picnic put together the current champions of poetry in South Africa under one roof. Taking to the stage were Belita Andre, winner of WOW A Slam, Solly Ramatswi winner of Word and Sound, Masai Sepuru, winner of Tshwane Speak Out Loud and Tory Saint, Poetry Africa Slam champion.

“World of Words has grown beyond expectations and we plan to do more things to grow the culture and what we stand for,” Mgiba said
