Principal discusses highlights and challenges

PARKVIEW – Principal Tracey Megom said the school's diversity is its greatest strength.

Principal of Parktown High School for Girls Tracey Megom said the school has experienced a successful year, celebrating many achievements across all areas at the school.

The matric class of 2018 achieved a 100 per cent pass and a 98.1 per cent bachelor degree pass. The school was once again acknowledged as the top school in the district and the top feeder school to Wits University.

The school also turned 96 and proudly celebrated almost a century in education. Almost 200 old girls returned to the school, the oldest of whom was 97 and celebrating her 80th reunion.

Parktown Girls also upgraded their library, providing a modern research space for girls with a range of books for all reading levels, languages and preferences.

Megom highlighted learner Emily Barnes who achieved 4th position in the country in the English Olympiad and gymnast Caitlin Rooskranz who was selected to participate in the 2020 Olympic Gymnastics Team.

She said the school is a microcosm of the country, replicating many problem experienced in society.

“We are working hard to get the girls and staff to accept and understand each other’s differences. This diversity is the school’s greatest strength and being able to work together gives our girls such a wonderful advantage when they leave school… Learning to work collaboratively is an ongoing challenge as this is not being role-modelled enough in our country.”

Megom said that staff, learners and parents are working on an exciting project called ‘Schools as Moral Communities’, which involves looking at the school’s culture and having honest conversations about inclusivity and how things need to change to create a sense of belonging for all. She looks forward to more conversations on this in 2020.

“On behalf of Parktown High School for Girls, I would like to thank the Parkview and surrounding communities for all the support they have given to the school over the course of 2019. We would like to wish all community members a blessed and peaceful festive season and safe travels to those who are travelling.”
