Don’t drink and drive, we want you back

ALEXANDRA – Don't be part of the statistics, we want you back urges councillor Mkhonto.

Alexandrians, please resist the temptation to consume alcohol while driving until you arrive at your destination during the festive season.

This was a message to the township residents from DA proportional representative councillor Shadrack Mkhonto when he wished them well and a safe return after the holidays. “It’s a time for all of us to be merry and reunite with family and friends yet conversely, maybe a time for others to be mourned by relatives if they don’t heed the advice,” Mkhonto said referring to the spike in road-related deaths at this time. “Don’t be part of the statistics we dread to hear of at the end.”

Hundreds perished in previous periods mostly from drunken and careless driving, sometimes involving other innocent road users and pedestrians. Mkhonto said with Alex already struggling with unrelenting crime, it will be too overwhelming for more to also perish after stern warnings on safety also from road and transport agencies.

He urged those who will be on the road any time of day to obey traffic laws and exercise caution in compliance with safety messages that are repeated to the motoring public every year, yet, many continue to violate traffic laws resulting in loss of life which could be avoided.
