Cake and candy sales raise R5 000 for erosion project

PARKVIEW – Three St John's boys raised R4 000 towards the Zoo Lake Erosion Project through cakes and candy sales.

Help towards the Zoo Lake Erosion Project is welcome in any form and learners from St John’s Preparatory School heeded the call as three Grade 7 boys raised R 5 000 for the project through a cake and candy sale.

According to erosion project manager Jacky Cresteil, the boys initiated the whole project themselves and her group only discovered what they had done when a teacher called to ask for banking details.

The three boys, Ronald Teixeira, Kirin Brewer, and Jaime Copperthwaite, said they belong to the environmental club at St John’s and they wanted to do their bit for the community. Jaime said their teacher told them about the erosion project and they rose up to the challenge.

Kirin said they also do other projects as a club. “We encourage recycling, collect plastic bread tags and if we reach 50 000 tags, we can donate a wheelchair. We also did a big project for World Environment Day where all the boys made masks using recyclable material and wore them to school,” said Kirin.

He added that the club has been around for years and learners are only able to join in Grade 7.

The three learners encouraged more community members to help in the erosion project any way they can.
