There have been several social media reports of escaped suspects at the High Court in Johannesburg this afternoon, 9 December.
According to reports, five suspects escaped from the holding cells, three suspects were shot by police, one recaptured and one is the run. Gauteng spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters confirmed the incident, “One of the suspects was fatally shot, two others seriously wounded, one is in police custody, and the fifth one is still at large. The four were apprehended before they could exit the court building.”
The circumstances leading to the escape and incident is still unknown, police authorities are on the scene to investigate further.
Peters added, “This includes the verification and confirmation of the identities of the suspects. Details of the fifth suspect, who is at large, will be circulated pending confirmation. ”
