A good meal and light-hearted conversations made for the perfect get-together for the residents of Upper Houghton.
Resident Brendon Naicker hosted Houghton Community Connect which enabled residents to come together and network while learning about each other’s activities in the communities they serve.
Pastor Henry Jacobs spoke about the Kingdom Dream Centre which comprises of a group inspiring volunteers passionate about helping those in need around Cleveland. He said the centre aims to embark on initiatives for community viability by offering economic, social and cultural services. “We have a feeding scheme which has been running for a while now. We feed about 3 000 children every day. We started with three schools and the target is to feed 10 000 children every day by next year October,” Jacobs added.
He added that they were also focusing on job creation by giving stationery to unemployed people. Jacobs said they were taking stationery into schools and giving it to unemployed parents at those schools to sell and get empowered.
Jacobs said the centre volunteers had attended the community get-together to seek who they could partner with in order to empower more people in need.
Resident and chairperson of the Winter-Feeding Initiative, Riccardo Houghton also spoke about the Norwood feeding scheme where they feed about 100 people for three months in winter and they were also seeking funders. “We give the people decent meals and not just soup. We also buy them blankets and scarfs. We don’t want to just stop at Norwood but we want to extend. We would like to team up with the Dream Centre and give back,” Houghton said.
The attendees watched a video presentation of one of the schools visited by the Kingdom Dream Centre and learnt about the impact of feeding those in need as well as the need for more givers.
