Attempted murder suspect behind bars

LINKSFIELD – A man who was found in possession of a vehicle linked to several armed robberies in Johannesburg filling stations is behind bars.

Officials from the Johannesburg Flying Squad, Johannesburg Metro Police Department K9 unit and Tracker Connect arrested one suspect for attempted murder, possession of a hijacked vehicle and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Authorities arrested the suspect on 13 November at about 4.45 am after following up on information about three suspects in a white Chevrolet Cruze related to robberies which occurred at other filling stations around Johannesburg.

This after the vehicle was spotted in the Linksfield area where they had allegedly just committed a business robbery at a garage.

Johannesburg Flying Squad senior personnel officer Raymond Sambo said that when authorities approached the vehicle, the suspects started shooting at them. “They [authorities] returned fire and a chase ensued and the suspects’ vehicle veered off the road and crashed into an embankment next to M12 Rand Show off-ramp in Soweto,” he said.

Sambo added that two suspects managed to flee from the scene and the other one was left trapped inside the vehicle. “He had sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital under police guard and will be detained at Mondeor Police Station.

“A 9mm Glock firearm with numbers filed off and ammunition, cigarettes and cash tills were recovered.”

Sambo said the investigations regarding the incident were still going on with the suspect aged 31 expected to appear at the Booysens Magistrates’ Court.

“Members of the public are encouraged to continue to collaborate with police by reporting crime and any suspicious activities or persons. Information may be given anonymously by phoning the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or calling the nearest police station.”
