Alek Blak breaks radio silence

JOBURG – Alek Blak has finally broken his two-year long radio silence with a new single, Luna, a tragic song that explores the experience of an amicable break-up.

After a long hiatus and break from the music scene, journalist and musician, Alek Blak has finally broken his two-year long radio silence with a new single, Luna, a tragic song that explores the experience of an amicable break-up.

Alek said, “Luna is a break-up song – a very amicable break-up. It tells the story of a relationship that’s going well – where no one has cheated, no one has deceived anyone, and everything is near perfect. But there’s a strong sense of ‘I don’t think I belong here anymore’ – and the song goes into exploring that feeling, and how that leads into the separation.”

Following his debut release New Day in 2017, Alek set himself up as a musician to watch. Now, almost two years later, he has followed up his debut with the mellow song that captures the feelings of defeat, exhaustion, tiredness, fear and doubt.

“Usually, I write my songs with my guitar. But this time it was different because I already had productions ready from a guy called Thomas Hadek. He is brilliant, and I wrote Luna straight from the production in one go. It came so easily to me. “And then, before I go into studio, I’ll always record the song on my laptop with my little home mic and I’ll plan out the song there. I already know everything I want to do on the song when I eventually go into the studio to record it professionally.”

Although having to carry the costs of producing his own music – from studio time, production, mixing and mastering – Alek said there was power in being and independent artist and knowing he was the owner of his creative work as he released Luna under his company, Alek Blak Media.

“I love the fact that I was able to do that. I can tell the story I want to tell, in the way that I want to tell it – and I think that’s the gift that comes with independence.”

During his hiatus from music, Alek said he worked on re-establishing his journalism career and helped build a health, fitness and wellness platform from nothing before jetting off to his first love – music and song writing.

“I released Luna now almost as a reminder to everyone that I’m still around, and I’m still singing and making music. It is a prelude to my EP which I’m planning to release next year. The EP is going to be quite dynamic, still very much me – but a bit of a different and unexpected me. I cannot wait until that full body of work is out. That’s when I will feel like my real music journey is beginning.”
