The Rotary Club golf day raises funds for its charities

PARKVIEW – Through a golf day, the Rotary Club managed to raise funds which will go towards its three charity projects.

The Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn raised R100 000 for charity at its annual golf day at the Parkview Golf Club on 8 November.

The money will go towards three of the charitable projects the club supports: Donate-a-Loo, the Realema teacher training programme and Meriting training courses for would-be entrepreneurs.

Donate-a-Loo provides safe toilets at primary schools; Realema identifies potential teachers and puts them through a five-year programme, which includes a teaching degree; and Meriting provides youngsters with training in how to set up businesses, seed capital to get the businesses going, and mentoring to keep them sustainable.

The club’s mission is to transform communities by empowering young people. It aims to provide services that empower and sustain, partnerships with communities for the upliftment of young people, and sustainable support to children in need.

Its eighth golf day since 2012 was supported by 92 golfers, among them 13 women, playing an American full-scramble, better ball, Stableford competition.

The winners were Kayleigh Woodman and Justin Louw, followed by Justin Sloane and Paul-Michael Keichel, with third place going to Mickey Sardinha and Jayson McGregor, and fourth to Russ Smith and Liz Read. Nearest to pin on the 15th hole was Sean Mills, on the fifth was Adriaen Sligcher, and on the third was Tony Reddy. The longest ladies’ drive was won by Nieve Klinkenberg and the longest men’s drive-by Hendrik Wessels.

Two ‘barrows of booze’ were raffled – one was won by Tim Byrne, from Parktown North, and the other by golfer Matt Mathee.

Details: The club invites anyone interested in joining Rotary to contact Joan Donet at joandonet.60@gmail.com or to attend the weekly meetings held at the Parkview Golf Club at 7 am on Wednesdays.
