Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett highlighted the infestation of shot hole borer as one of the greatest challenges facing her ward this year.
Huggett commended the work of Houghton resident Glenda Wheeler and the Lower Houghton Residents Association in dealing with the borer.
She said collaboration between City Parks and Professor Wilhelm de Beer of Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute had resulted in a programme to identify and log infected trees. They are also liaising with residents of Norwood to see this programme replicated in their area.
Huggett said some other challenges have included security issues in Killarney and the growing influx of displaced people, drug dealers and illegal traders of alcohol. She said zoning and building control issues have arisen but remain unresolved. She also pointed out the lack of completion of the Rea Vaya in Louis Botha Avenue as a major frustration.
The establishment of community policing sector clusters, a new steering committee for Paterson Park and collaboration between various residents associations across the ward have been some major positives for Huggett.
She looked forward to seeing the completion of the Rea Vaya, the implementation by the City of proper control over zoning and building issues and the completion of Patterson Park and the Police Reservist Waterfall Heritage Site as exciting projects to look forward to next year.
“The collaboration between various entities and residents in Ward 73 has been astounding and, as a result, so much has been achieved. I want to thank every single person for what they are doing and for all their support. I wish everyone a happy, restful and peaceful break,” said Huggett.
