Bra dash raises awareness about early cancer detection

PARKHURST – The dash helped raise R5 995 for PinkDrive.

Men and women sporting pink bras dashed down 4th Avenue in Parkhurst on 27 October to raise awareness about breast cancer.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and PinkDrive sought to take advantage of the occasion to raise funds for their services. PinkDrive offers free cancer screening for gender-related cancers including breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer.

Marketing manager for PinkDrive Fèbè Meyer said, “We want to create awareness for the cause in a fun manner. Any fitness level can participate in this event and stand in solidarity with those fighting the disease.”

Meyer thanked Craft Restaurant which hosted the event and other 4th Avenue shops which supported the cause.

Owner of Craft Restaurant Jo Pinheiro said this was the sixth year that his restaurant had hosted the Bra Dash.

“We want to raise awareness that early detection saves lives. This all started as a dare when one woman dared another to run down the street wearing their bras,” said Pinheiro.

“Ladies of all ages, shapes and sizes have since joined, reaffirming how cancer can touch anybody. I commend community members for dropping their inhibitions to take part,” he said, adding that cancer had touched his family first-hand.
