St John’s Academy learners celebrate valedictory

HOUGHTON – Matric learners from a number of disadvantaged schools who have benefitted from the St John's College Academy enjoyed a valedictory service at the school.

The St John’s College Academy matric learners celebrated the end of their time at St John’s at a valedictory service at the Crypt Chapel.

Music, speeches and a prize giving for the learners who excelled commenced before head and deputy head boys Joel Dilungidi and Rulani Mtshali were announced.

The St John’s College Academy is an after-school enrichment programme for boys in Grade 10, 11 and 12 from disadvantaged communities. The learners visit St John’s College three times a week for lessons promoting excellence in maths, physical science, English and life skills.

Head of the academy Agnes Nugent spoke at the service about beginnings and endings.

This is the first Grade 12 group from Highlands North Boys’ High to matriculate from the academy. This year also marked the start of the prep academy where Grade 5 youngsters from the surrounding community join for extra tuition.

Thabo Malele said, “It has been a tool that I have used to improve my well-being, communication skills and potential.”

Many of the boys from this year’s matric group will be receiving bursaries to pursue tertiary education next year. Ayibongwe Dube was awarded a Realema Teacher Intern bursary and will be starting his internship at The Ridge School next year.
