Lyndhurst Primary School to celebrate its centenary

LYNDHURST – The Lyndhurst Primary School is gearing up for its centenary celebrations on 23 November this year.

It’s been 100 years since Lyndhurst Primary School opened its doors for learning and teaching. The school will this year host a fun walk simultaneously with fun day to mark its existence on Saturday 23 November.

The school was officially opened in 1919. By June 1992 the number of children on the register was less than 100 and it was decided that the school will be closed, however, the school was reopened in October the very same year.

In 2014 the school was twinned with Bovet Primary School. These two schools are the pioneers at the Twinning Programme. In 2016 the school was refurbished to become a fully-fledged ICT school.

The theme for this year is ‘100th Year Celebration’ as the many learners and parents will be celebrating and looking back at the years that were so productive and which contributed towards producing individuals that have benefited the country.

“The school has a complement of 917 learners with staff members. Most of the learners come from a less-fortunate environment, and with the school having a daily feeding scheme, we wish to make this day special by providing each learner with a snack box and feeding all our guest,” said the school principal Wellington Shaw.

The school will approach various donors for donation as they plan for the special event. They are also pleading with members of the public to kindly assist them so they will make this day a success.

“We will appreciate your humble contribution and kindly ask you to advise us by latest on 22 November to arrange for collection if possible,” he said.

The registration fee for this special occasion is R200 for adults and R150 for children. The participants will get a Fun Walk T-shirt when they register.

Members of the public can also hire a stall at R500 to sell their items on the day. Businesses are encouraged to advertise their businesses.

It will be a day filled with lots of activities including slides and jumping castles for the young ones. The Department of Health will provide free services including testing for blood pressure, blood sugar, PSA, HIV and Pap smear.

The fun walk will start at the school’s top field gate, through Johannesburg Road to Baxwell Road (Sesani Studios) and then to Gresswold Park. The walkers will then proceed to 2nd Avenue and then back to Lyndhurst Primary School.
