Armed robbery turned to perjury

NORWOOD – A man whose story changed several times was arrested for the crime of perjury after he allegedly deceived the police.

A man who allegedly lied to the police that he was robbed at a gunpoint is behind bars.

This after the man who works for the company which delivers cigarettes allegedly lied that after delivering the cigarettes at a supermarket in Orchards he was robbed of the money.

According to Norwood Police Station’s spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha, the man who was a passenger received an amount of R127 000 from the shop owner after delivering cigarettes.

He subsequently went to the delivery truck to put the money in the drop safe while the driver stayed behind to get more money.

He then alleged that he didn’t put the money in the safe but left the truck with the cash and as he stood next to the truck, apparently two guys stopped by and pointed a firearm at him and took the money.

The suspect further alleged that the armed robbers then drove off.

“He couldn’t give us the colour of the car and make. His story changed multiple times and got even worse,” Matsotsha said.

Those vehicles are usually escorted by private security companies at all times but with this alleged incident, the security company didn’t see anything or any symbol of armed robbery.

“He was then arrested for the crime of perjury.”

He warned that those who had already reported falsified crimes or were planning to report these crimes would face harsh consequences since it is a crime deceiving the police.
