Community members won’t allow lake’s bank to erode

PARKVIEW – The Erosion Project at Zoo Lake is making notable progress since its launch about four months ago.

The Erosion Action Day at Zoo Lake in Parkview was well-attended by community members.

The project which aims to restore the eroded banks around the lake was launched four months ago by the Zoo Lake Users Group, Moyo restaurant, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo and various other groups.

Erosion Project manager Jacky Cresteil said they were planting agapanthus and dietes on the banks which were very hardy and drought-tolerant. She added that these plants were ideal because the geese and ducks were not partial to eating them.

Cresteil said they had 11 more phases to implement and they estimated it would be finished by next year. “This project costs money and if anyone would like to donate please do. City Parks helps but with so many other projects in the pipeline their assistance can get limited,” added Cresteil.

She said about 50 to 70 people had volunteered and Moyo restaurant was providing some tasty snacks.

“The sense of community is so amazing and great to see. We encourage people to come and help.”
