Dog owners take their pets out for a healthy walk

KILLARNEY – Over 200 participants took part in the Sandton SPCA Mutt Walk with all proceeds going to the society.

The morning of 20 October saw local residents and their furry companions make their way to the Killarney Country Club to show their support for the Sandton SPCA by participating in the annual Mutt Walk.

According to the Sandton SPCA chairman, Nick Smith, the participants contributed to the SPCA’s running costs by purchasing tickets for the event. “We have 150 or more dogs with participants doing 2.5km laps. If they do two laps (5km) then they get Discovery Vitality points. All money raised goes to SPCA rescues, taking care of animals and inspectors who check on the animals,” Smith said.

He added that they had seen a lot of familiar faces as most of the dogs who took part had been previously adopted from the SPCA.

Area manager for Absolute Pets, Lloyd Matthews said they have been part of the Mutt Walk for the past three years. “We strive for happy and healthy pets and sponsor projects which promote healthy pets. We come to these events because we want to encourage communities to keep their pets healthy without compromise,” said Matthews.
