The illegal outdoor advertising signs are still an ongoing problem and recently the legality of a sign located in Parkwood came into question. Managing director at Wideopen Platform in Rosebank, Tomer Cohen sent a letter to the City of Johannesburg Internal Investigations regarding irregularities uncovered leading to the approval of the Sky Sign on Bolton Road and Jan Smuts Avenue.
According to the letter, the information to determine these irregularities was obtained through the Public Access to Information Act (PAIA) requests.
“We hereby notify you of some irregularities and maladministration we have uncovered regarding an application for an outdoor advertising sign going through pre-evaluation, public participation, outdoor advertising steering committee meeting and approved on 19 October without the proper requirements being applied based on the City of Johannesburg Outdoor Advertising by-laws, 2009,” read the letter.
In the letter, Cohen further requested that an investigation be carried out on the City official who allowed for the sign to be approved.
In response to the matter, stakeholder manager at the MMC Office for Development Planning, Poppy Cynthia Louw said, “The City can confirm receipt of the letter from Wideopen on 23 August 2019. However, the City is not in a position to address the allegations contained therein, as the allegations are currently under investigation. The complainant will be provided with a written response to the allegations in due course.”
