ALEXANDRA – Uber taxi driver hauls, bundles robber into boot.

An armed robber will rue the day he attacked an Uber taxi driver who bundled him into the boot of the vehicle before his arrest by the police.

The accused Kelvin Mathebula (24) was denied bail and remanded in custody to 28 October by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

The victim responded to Mathebula and an accomplice’s call for a taxi from Marlboro Gardens to Kew. On arrival at the destination the accused, who was in the front with the victim/driver, produced a gun and switched off and removed the vehicle keys from the ignition.

He took the driver’s phone and money, however, the driver reacted and grabbed the accused’s hand with the gun and held it down.

As they fought outside the vehicle, the accomplice fled followed by the accused who got free after hitting the driver/victim’s hand with a wheel spanner.

Luckily, an Avanza taxi driver arrived and assisted the victim to look for the robbers who they spotted nearby. They caught the accused and recovered the victim’s phone. The victim took him back to his taxi and bundled him into the boot until patrolling security arrived and called the police who arrested the accused from the boot. The gun he had used was a toy gun that had broken into pieces, found on the floor on the driver’s side together with the keys.
