Netcare doctors temporarily suspended following child’s death

PARKTOWN – Netcare has announced that the outcome of an internal process relating to the incident against Professor Peter Beale and Dr Abdulhay Munshi will determine whether the suspension will become permanent.

Netcare has confirmed that two specialists have been informed that their admitting and practicing privileges applicable to Netcare facilities have been temporarily suspended pending an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding a child’s death at Netcare Park Lane Hospital in Parktown.

Netcare group medical director Dr Anchen Laubscher said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young boy whose tragic and unexpected death prompted Netcare to temporarily suspend the practicing and admitting privileges of two doctors.”

Laubscher explained that doctor practices were governed by the Health Professionals Act and the Health Professions Council of South Africa’s (HPCSA) rules and regulations. Netcare conducts an evaluation for all doctors before admitting and practising privileges are granted to Netcare facilities to ensure they are qualified and are in good standing with the council. The HPCSA status is verified on an annual basis for all doctors practicing at Netcare facilities.

According to Laubscher, the status of the suspended doctors Professor Peter Beale and anaesthetist Dr Abdulhay Munshi remain intact at present.

The outcome of the internal investigation relating to the incident against Beale and Munshi will determine whether the suspension will become permanent and whether it is necessary to provide a report on the matter to the council.

Laubscher said, “As the governing body for doctors in South Africa, it would be at the discretion of the HPCSA to decide whether it would be in the best interests of the public to remove the practicing rights of a particular doctor. In such a case, the HPCSA would then update their publicly available register.”
