Bonj’s song to family and friend

JOBURG – Bonj dedicates her forthcoming album to her family and the role they’ve played in her career.

A vocal and musical powerhouse, Bonj has a sound that crosses over pop, electronic and dance music and is a complete breath of fresh air in the local music landscape. The vocal powerhouse was the official opening act during Sam Smith’s South African tour earlier this year. Having put in her 10 000 hours in the industry, the fruits of her labour are starting to show as she gears up to release her debut album. We caught up with the sing to talk about her musical journey, forthcoming album and, love for music.

Q You recently released Against the Grain alongside DJ Zinhle, how was the vibe when you guys were making the song because when you listen to the song you feel a cool and mellow relaxation vibe. Was it like that when you guys recorded the song?

A At first I thought it would be intimidating being in studio with her because of everything she accomplished and who she is in the industry, but, she’s really humble and as soon as she got in the studio it was so chilled and easy working together. It was so organic – it was quite a fun experience and really collaborative.

Q What drew you to the music industry, where did the love for music come from?

A I have to say my family. Growing up, music had been a part of my upbringing for a long time, but what made me pursue singing professionally was my older sister who got into classical and opera music and all id hear was her playing choral songs and music, just hearing her sing and be so free just made me want to also want to belt out – that’s where it began really just me singing and being confident in singing. When my sisters started hearing me singing they encouraged me to pursue music professionally and as a career.

Q How has the journey been so far?

A The journey has been a continuous up and down, I must say. But I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything because I’d be doing this because I can’t imagine waking up and doing anything else. The achievements that I’ve made really do make for all the downs.

Q Talking about the ups, you’ve opened for Sam Smith when he was in the country, how was that experience?

A It was amazing. When I was selected, I was amongst a league of good singer/songwriters in the country and for Sam Smith to listen to my music and basically love what I’m doing and pick me was an amazing experience – a huge affirmation for me and what I’ve been doing for all these years. It kick-started a chain of events.

Q You’re currently adding the finishing touches to your album, when can we expect the album and can you take us through the album’s vibe?

A I’ve been working on the album for the past year and I’m hoping to release it in January, next year. The message is really hopeful – it’s about love and heartbreak and also about self-introspection. It’s quite an important body of work that I’m really excited to share – it’s fun and not too-deep. It comes from the heart and more than anything it’s a dedication to my family and their support for me and my career.
