Former Highlands North Boys’ High school search for former mates

HIGHLANDS NORTH – The Highlands Boys Education Foundation aims to restore the 80-year-old school.

Former learners at Highlands North Boys’ High School have established a foundation to rebuild their school, however, they need support from their old peers.

The Highlands Boys Education Foundation, through its Highlands Old Boys 100 Club, aims to restore the 80-year-old school. According to co-chairperson of the foundation, Mike Bersiks, the idea was sparked by the social gatherings they had in 2010 and recently on 30 August when they celebrated the school’s 80th birthday party.

Bersiks said when they visited the school, they discovered plenty of maintenance issues and structural decays that needs to be attended to. Unfortunately, he said, the school has no funds to deal with these such issues and the ‘old boys’ saw a need to assist.

“Currently we are in a process of re-inventing a borehole which has not been functioning for many years and re-instal the current lights with energy bulbs to enable the school to reduce on municipal costs,” Bersiks said.

“The building is still in good shape but you can see that it has been somewhat neglected for the past 15 years. What we want to do is to update things such as the libraries, lights and help with the maintenance of the school facilities in general.”

The former learner and Highlands North resident, said they are also looking the ‘bigger’ picture which includes supporting current poor learners.

“We are looking at offering scholarships to learners who cannot afford to further their studies at higher education level like universities who are deserving but have no means to do because of the poor background.”

He, however, said they can only do that with support from the former old boys from the school. Bersiks said they are looking for old boys as far back as from the 70s to even those who completed last year.
