Police arrest several suspected gunmen and confiscate six guns

JOHANNESBURG – The firearms will be sent to ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of other crimes.


Together with the railway police unit, the Johannesburg Central Police Station‘s members arrested four alleged gunmen and recovered six unlicensed firearms.

According to the station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, the arrests happened between 11 and 12 October in various parts of Johannesburg while police were conducting routine crime prevention work.

Mbele explained that on 11 October, four suspects, who are also security guards, were arrested. He said one of the suspects was carrying an unlicensed firearm on the corner of Eloff Ext and Village Deep streets. “Police were accompanying a victim of an assault at the said location and when they got there, he informed the police that one of the suspects was in possession of an unlicensed firearm,” said Mbele. “Police indeed recovered it underneath a bed.”

In another incident on 12 October, police arrested a man inside a taxi at Wanderers Taxi Rank on the corner of Noord and Wanderers streets. “Police searched passengers inside a taxi to Durban and on, one of the suspects, they recovered three unlicensed firearms and live ammunition inside his hand bag. The fourth suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Mbele.

He added that police also recovered suspected stolen property, including eight wedding rings, Seiko and Timberland Breitling watches as well as several sealed perfumes and two knives.

Mbele said the firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

The investigation is underway and suspects will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
