Police have released two learners into their parents’ custody after they were arrested for armed robbery, however, they are still looking for a third learner who was allegedly involved in the crime.
Johannesburg Central Police Station spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, said the learners, aged between 15 and 17, allegedly robbed a 13-year-old learner using dangerous weapons at Gandhi Square on 15 October.
According to Mbele, the victim was waiting for the bus to take him home after school. “[The suspects] approached him, threatening him with a knife and a scissor, took his cell phone and ran away,” said Mbele.
“The victim screamed for help and the security guard managed to apprehend the one suspect. Police were called to the scene and recovered both weapons. Two of them managed to run away then.”
The next day (16 October), the father of one of the suspects who ran away contacted the police and invited them to his home. Mbele added that when police arrived, they recovered the victim’s cell phone and immediately arrested the learner.
“The two have been charged with a case of armed robbery and possession of a stolen cell phone and both were released to the care of their parents.”
Police are still looking for the other suspect and a police investigation is still underway. The suspects were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 17 October.
