Summer Twigs is a paradise for young ones

GLENHAZEL – The Summer Twigs Nursery School which began at the beginning of May last year is a paradise for young ones.

Situated close to Summerwood Primary School, Summer Twigs Nursery School is a phenomenal place for children to start their education.

The school is headed by retired teacher Glenda Osher who has over 40 years’ experience in the teaching industry, and comprises of three staff members.

With two classes, this nursery school provides a conducive environment for young ones to learn. One class accommodates babies up to three years while the other class accommodates children from four to five years.

The ratio for the babies’ class is two assistants with six babies while the other class is two assistants with nine children.

It also provides afternoon care to accommodate children’s parents.

The school’s name is derived from the Summerwood Primary School. The principal for the primary school Rakesh Ramcharan explained that the name symbolises that before you grow up you start as a twig, “This shows the start of the child’s education.

“Our focus is to provide a quality learning experience for children within a very safe environment which is clean and attractive,” he said.

Children from different schools in the area, especially those from Summerwood also attend the aftercare. Most of the children who attend aftercare facilitated by Osher benefit greatly.

The aftercare programme is structured to help establish learning areas in which children are struggling. “It is a very well attended programme with surrounding schools from as far as Linksfiend and Edenvale attending this programme,” Osher added.

“We currently have 23 children who come here and get their homework done.”

She said she picks up lots of issues and refer them to teachers who can attend to them in class.

The nursery, which is part of the bigger school, allows the younger ones to have access to the primary school facilities and ultimately give them an immense opportunity to learn.

Seated inside the classroom which accommodates children from four to five years old, Osher indicated that she had designed walls with charts and colours and she calls it a stimuli wall. “This stimulate and encourage learning for a particular age group as we have done it in both of our classes. We allow children to learn and simultaneously enjoy the classes that are also fun.”

She said the nursery is a family orientated place and they occasionally host events with a tailored programme throughout the year and a formal graduation ceremony for those who are going to start grade one.

The nursery operates from 7am until 5pm for a full day and from 7am until 12pm for a half day.

Osher said they arrive early to accommodate parents who need to drop their children off early and who need to pick them up late. “We would like to become a community-based school where the local community is involved,” said Ramcharan.
