KEW – Liberty Community College wins bronze medals in this year's Sbusiso 'Cosmos' Zwane School's tournament.

The netball team of Liberty Community College in Kew are adamant that they will win the Sbusiso ‘Cosmos’ Zwane Schools Tournament next year.

This after the team secured the third position in this year’s tournament.

Thirty schools competed and Liberty Community College lost in the semi-finals and went on to win the third place play-off. The team won the school a laptop and a printer, and the players received bronze medals.

The team’s captain Yvette Mkhize who is in Grade 11 said they were aiming to win the annual tournament next year.

“This year we practised harder and we were more confident than last year,” said Mkhize who also plays for Trafalgar Stars in Hillbrow.

Mkhize believes the tournament which helps to identify and nurture talent could help her one day become a professional netball player.

The team coach and teacher Nkululeko Ndlovu said sports helps nurture discipline in their learners and keeps them out of trouble.

“Even in class, learners who participate in sports activities are very disciplined and earnestly focus on their school work,” he said.

“I believe learners learn a lot when participating in sports activities.”

Despite limited resources, the college encourages learners to participate in sport. The college has no sports ground and uses the parking lots for practices.

Ndlovu appealed to members of the public who are willing to assist them with sports facilities to contact them.
