WESTCLIFF – Investigations are ongoing at the Rosebank Police Station after the fatal shooting of a gender activist.

Rosebank Police Station confirmed the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Arvitha Doodnath in Westcliff on 12 October.

Doodnath lectured law at Vaal University of Technology and was a legal researcher at Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF).

According to the spokesperson, Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe, Doodnath was found shot dead in her car at about 9pm at the intersection of Jan Smuts Avenue and Upper Park Drive.

“There is no known motive at this stage and police are still trying to piece together the information. Nothing was taken, including the car. A case of murder is being investigated at the Rosebank Police Station and the suspects are still at large,” Mdletshe said.

He added that he could not divulge anything further as it was a very complex case but asked for anyone who saw anything at all or had information to contact the police.

Director at Helen Suzman Foundation, Francis Antonie said Doodnath had lived her life with fierce determination, compassion, and joy.

Antonie added, “We wish to extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends for this tragic loss, to whom we offer our support and prayers. Arvitha was, and remains, an integral part of the HSF family and we will forever remember her in this way.”
