Suspect held for possession of illegal gun

JOHANNESBURG – The recovered firearm was sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in a crime.

A 28-year-old man faces serious charges including possession of an illegal firearm.

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele said police officers arrested the man on the corner of King George and Plein streets on 21 September. “Police were busy patrolling when they saw five suspicious males roaming around the area,” Mbele said.

“When [the suspects] saw the police they then ran away in different directions. Police managed to apprehend one suspect and recovered a firearm with live ammunition. He failed to produce a license to possess a firearm.”

The recovered firearm was then sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.

An investigation is still underway and the suspect has since appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court and remanded in police custody.
