Two men face attempted robbery charges

JOHANNESBURG – The suspect was apprehended, assaulted and handed to the police.

Two men aged between 28 and 36 years old were arrested on 6 October by the Johannesburg police thanks to a rapid response by the community.

It is alleged that three men attempted to rob a supermarket on the corner of Mooi and Albertina Sisulu streets.

According to the police, a general worker at the store went outside to close the roller door when one of the suspects pointed a firearm at him.

“The suspect with the firearm forced him inside the shop and he was then joined by two of his accomplices,” said Captain Xoli Mbele, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station.

“Two of the suspects had firearms and they threatened the staff demanding money and one of the staff screamed for help and the suspects fled the scene. The community responded and apprehended one of the suspects who was then assaulted but police rescued him.”

Police also gave chase and managed to apprehend the second suspect and two firearms with live rounds were recovered, said Mbele.

He added that the suspect who was assaulted by the community was currently in hospital under police guard.

They will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court facing charges of attempted business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The other suspect is still at large and a manhunt has been launched by the police
