Man sentenced to 15 years in prison for stealing passport

JOHANNESBURG – Two other co-accused are still on the run and sought by the police.

Johannesburg police are searching for two suspects involved in a robbery that has left one of their accomplices sentenced to 15 years in prison.

John Tebatso Masuatlhoane (31) was convicted of assault and robbery on 7 October by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court in a case that commenced on 20 April last year.

According to Captain Xoli Mbele, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, the incident happened on the corner of Plein and Joubert streets while the victim was walking to catch a bus at the Park Station to Mozambique.

“Masuatlhoane and his co-accused confronted the victim and one of them choked him while his other accomplice stabbed him and took his passport, clothes, cell phone and R3 000 in cash.

“The victim came to the police station to file a case. The police officers accompanied him to the scene of crime and he managed to notice and point out one of the suspects [Masuatlhoane] who was at the nearby park.”

He was immediately arrested and further detained while awaiting trial. “He was then found guilty of the charges of robbery and assault with grievous bodily harm and then sentenced to 15 years in absentia of the two wanted co-accused.”

Police are still searching for the two other accomplices and Mbele requests anyone with information to come forward and assist the police with their investigations.
