It’s time for the annual Roeadean water polo tournament

HOUGHTON – The water polo Prestige Cup at Roedean is underway with a number of schools set to participate.

Water polo players will once again do battle for the Old Mutual/Roedean School Prestige Cup this month.

Now in its ninth year, this annual competition has certainly become a red-letter event on the water polo calendar. Ten top Gauteng schools playout for the honour of winning the Prestige Cup, but the aim of the competition as a whole, is not so much sporting success as community service. The pool events are played over two Saturdays, namely 12 October and 18 January next year, with the playoffs and the finals being played on 22 February next year.

Sponsored by Old Mutual, the tournament requires all competing schools to have a CSI Learn-to-Swim component. Each school has partnered with an under-resourced school and has implemented a sustainable programme which teaches swimming and/or water polo at its partnership school.

The prize money received by the top three schools is donated to their partnership schools to develop their learn-to-swim programme further. A highlight on finals day is the swim-a-thon where all the partnership schools are invited to swim and showcase their swimming skills. All participating schools receive sponsorship towards their learn-to-swim programme.

Pool A in the 2019/2020 season has St Stithians, St Peter’s, St Mary’s, St Dunstan’s and Rand Park. Pool B has Roedean, Kingsmead, Parktown Girls, Crawford and St Dominic’s. Both Pool A and Pool B, round one matches will be played on 12 October. All matches are played at Roedean School (SA) and spectators are most welcome.
