Banks notes, laptops and flat screen TVs seized in Yeoville

YEOVILLE – Operation Okae Molao was conducted in Yeoville on 2 October, with two suspects arrested.

Gauteng police arrested two suspects during a joint crime prevention (Okae Molao) on 2 October in Yeoville.

They seized more than 40 laptops and eight flat-screen television sets, all suspected to have been stolen, and counterfeit banknotes amounting to more than R12 000.

Police provincial spokesperson Kay Makhubele said in a statement that the operation was also conducted at businesses around Rocky Street, Harrison Street and Plein Street, counterfeit goods valued at more than R9 million were confiscated.

“A second suspect was arrested and handed over to Commercial Crime Investigators when police swooped on a shop across Bree Street in the Johannesburg CBD and found the shop to be trading illegally as a gambling spot,” said Makhubele.

In June this year, Police Minister General Bheki Cele visited and engaged with the community of Yeoville to address the community’s complaints about crime and policing in the area.

Makhubele added that Gauteng Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has ensured since then that regular operations were conducted in the area. “There has been shut down of a number of illegal liquor outlets and guesthouses where drug dealing and prostitution were taking place, also rescuing a number of young girls, some of whom were allegedly kidnapped and used as sex workers, ” he said.

He concluded that such operations would continue until crime was brought down to its lowest levels.
