The Duchess of Sussex a hit in Joburg

JOBURG – Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, gets a taste of Joburg’s hidden secrets, creative community and hopeful future.

On 23 September, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, kicked-off their 10-day Royal Tour visiting Africa.  The ten-day tour saw the Duke, Duchess and baby Archie visit South Africa as they covered charitable causes and boost Britain’s relationships abroad.

Visiting Joburg, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, was a hit with Joburgers. While in the City, she made a stop at Victoria Yards, Joburg’s lush hidden treasure, on 30 September where she was given a tour of the past and future of Victoria Yards and the historic urban fabric that surrounds it by 94 Colours’ Hector Mgiba and Sibusiso Zulu.”

“If someone had told me three years ago that I’d meet someone from the royal family I would’ve probably told them it’d never happen… today Sbu and I spent over an hour with Meghan Markle, princess of the royal family,” Mgiba said.

While at Joburg’s home of holistic creativity, the Duchess also made a stop at local denim designer, Tshepo Mohlala’s studio for a look at the craftsmanship, humility and work ethic that characterise the young designer’s brand, Tshepo. Mohlala said he received a call from the British embassy for an order of a pair of jeans for the Duchess, Mohlala took it a step further and surprised her with a pair of dungarees for Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

The Duchess also made a stop at the University of Johannesburg on 1 October where she echoed her advocacy to accessible education for all. She announced new Gender Grants for Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) member universities. The grants are expected to be awarded to   researchers at the University of Johannesburg, the University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Western Cape.
