Three suspects held in Johannesburg for impersonating police

JOHANNESBURG – A 42-year-old female is among the arrested.

Police officers arrested three people who were allegedly impersonating police officers and one also faces a charge of extortion.

According to Captain Xoli Mbele, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, the suspects, aged between 42 and 51, were arrested on 15 September while police were busy with their crime prevention programmes.

Mbele said police officers on patrol noticed the strange behaviour of two men on the corner of Jeppe and Small streets in the CBD. “They saw two males showing another person something in a plastic bag and suddenly they were searching for him.

“Police stopped the two males and upon searching them, they found two police ‘rank structures’ in their position. The suspects were immediately arrested”

Mbele said that police also apprehended a 42-year-old female for impersonating a police officer on the corner of Noord and Klein streets. She also faces a charge of extortion.

He explained that the suspect demanded a passport from a woman and her boyfriend. “The boyfriend didn’t have it and [the suspect] demanded R300 or threatened him with arrest. The female gave her two R200 instead. The female victim saw two police officers carrying shotguns and alerted them.”

Police arrested the women and recovered the R200.

An investigation is still underway and the suspects are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
