Drive-in Cinema makes a comeback

JOBURG – Drive-In sets out to revive drive-in cinema with classic film screenings.

It’s not about the film but the experience as this weekend Drive-In Cinema is coming to Randburg at St Stithian’s College for two nights.

Taking place in a different part of the city every month, Drive-In Cinema is reviving the experience of driving up to a big screen and watching a movie from the comfort of your car. Joburg, in fact, has a long history of drive-in cinemas with the city’s last permanent drive-in, the Velskoen Drive-in, having closed as recently as 2012.

In 2017 Drive-In launched with pop-up drive-in cinema events hosted monthly at different venues across the city. Generally, the film programme tends towards classic films, which are voted for by the public via Drive-In Cinema’s Facebook page.

This weekend, Drive-In will be screening Mrs Doubtfire and The Hangover on 27 September followed by Mrs Doubtfire and Bridesmaids on 28 September.
