Lombardy East Bowling Club celebrates Joseph Gabriel ‘Bick’ Stewart’s 100 years

LOMBARDY EAST – The Lombardy East Bowling Club prepares to celebrate club member Joseph Gabriel 'Bick' Stewart's 100 years.

Joseph Gabriel Stewart, known to all at the Lombardy East Bowling Club as ‘Bick’, will celebrate his 100th birthday on 2 October.

A longstanding member of the club who has actively played in fun bowls tournaments and events until recently, Bick is also an active member of the Moth’s Tim Lukin Shellhole and has been for many years. He served in the South African Airforce during World War 2 in North Africa.

Bick’s noteworthy and eventful life will be celebrated on 2 October at 5pm by his friends and staff at Thembalami, a Rand Aid retirement home where Bick now lives, and the Lombardy East Bowling Club will host the event.

The club will also host another event for him with his friends, club members, the Moths, and his family – some of whom will be coming from as far as the United Kingdom – on 5 October at 5pm.

The Tim Lukin Shellhole will also celebrate his birthday on 6 October at the Shellhole in Edenvale while another birthday party for the stalwart will be a combined event at Thembelani on 15 October for all the residents of the home.

Due to the longstanding support of members, the club continues to grow from strength to strength and still plays social bowls on Friday mornings and

Wednesday evenings under lights, according to Desiree Levin, a longstanding friend of Bick and a member of the Lombardy East Bowling Club.

The Lombardy East Club won the first division of the Mixed Super 8 League earlier this year and hopes to enter two teams for the coming season. It also recently formed an alliance with Alexandra’s Gauteng Football Club as they needed training facilities.

Gauteng FC, which plies its trade in the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association, has teams in five different age groups and all use the Lombardy East Bowling Club’s old tennis courts and old bowling greens for training.
