A sponsored Baby Yum Yum community clean-up signage missing

WAVERLY – The signage was removed without the owners being made aware by the Metro police.

A sign erected by parenting portal BabyYumYum on the corner of Scott Street and Corlett Drive in Waverley has been taken down and the portal’s founder Amanda Rogaly is demanding it back.

The sign was put up as part of celebrating the annual World Environmental Month in June as reported in the article Community greening drive gains momentum, [Week Ending 21 June]. The sign displayed messages of encouragement for residents to keep the area clean.

Rogaly claimed the sign was taken down by Metro police at about 1am on 28 August.

“We have video footage from a CCTV camera showing the officers removing and taking the signage away and still today we don’t know where they took it,” Rogaly said.

“We would appreciate if we can get back the sign. We do understand it was erected not following due processes but it is not like we are advertising a product, instead it’s about community upliftment.”

She added that they had spent more than R10 000 to manufacture and put up the sign.

As part of their green drive, the portal has created employment for jobless people and on a monthly basis they ensure that the area is clean and tidy by removing waste and weeds and even trimming trees.

Rogaly said she had spent about R1 000 to pay for these services. “Those people now stand to lose an income when we’re just trying to help and create jobs and simultaneously ensure a clean and healthy environment.

“This is what our rates and taxes should be paying for but it is not and now our sign is missing, and we’re being taken from one person to the other without any information of the sign’s whereabouts.”

She claimed she had spoken to more than 16 people on the phone and via email including councillors, the Metro police and Johannesburg Property Company but no one knew where the sign was.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar of the Metro police said people who wanted to erect a sign on land belonging to the City needed to approach the Outdoor Advertising Unit and they would be advised what processes needed to be followed.

“If you don’t do so it means you’re breaking the law and there is no excuse for that,” he added. “People must pay and they need to follow strict processes to avoid their signs being confiscated.”

For anybody who has had their signs removed, Minnaar advised them to visit Metro police impound offices in Randburg or in the Johannesburg CBD.
