Five men arrested in Hillbrow following Johannesburg looting spree

HILLBROW – The police received a tip-off and followed up on information.

Hillbrow police issued a stern warning to people who continue to loot shops saying they will stop at nothing to arrest people who break the law.

This follows the recent spate of violence and looting of shops purported to be foreign-owned in various parts of Johannesburg and neighbouring communities.

According to the spokesperson for the Hillbrow Police Station Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, raids still continue in their precinct to ensure that perpetrators face the full might of the law.

His statement comes amid an arrest of five suspects who were allegedly involved in the looting of taverns and liquor outlets in Hillbrow.

Zondo said they arrested the suspects following a tip-off from the community about the five suspects who were involved in looting.

“On Wednesday (4 September) Hillbrow police received a tip-off and followed up on information and together with the Metro officers proceeded to Vukuzakhe Flats where we raided a flat on the corner of Smith and Klein streets near Joubert Park.”

Five suspects who were in possession of suspected stolen property such as alcohol were arrested, he added.

The alcohol, with a value of R15 000, allegedly looted from the shops, was confiscated according to the police.

Zondo said raids will still continue and he urged the community to continue sharing information with the police so that the perpetrators can be arrested.
